WASHINGTON DC - Navy fighter aircraft the United States fall into the apartment complex in Virginia Beach, Friday (4/6/2012), is an F/A-18D Hornet jet seater tandem. The aircraft is the backbone of the U.S. naval air forces (U.S. Navy) during this time.
The plane crashed around 12:05 am local time, just moments after takeoff from Oceana Navy Air Base, located less than 3.2 miles from Mayfair Mews apartment complex where the plane went down. Witnesses said the saw the fire come out from the bottom of the right wing of the plane before it crashed.
The crash has so far only nine known to cause minor injuries, including two pilots who had to enable the chair thrower before falling. One pilot was found still attached to the chair thrower and his parachute in the middle of the ruins of the apartment.
Locals immediately transport the pilot is away from the fire bigger. "The pilot apologized for bumping our apartment," said Pat Kavanaugh, one of the residents who participated in handy.
Certainty the cause of the accident was not known. Captain Mark Weisberger of the U.S. Navy said early indications showed the aircraft experienced a mechanical failure that F/A-18D that are catastrophic.
The plane is from 106 Assault Squadron based at Oceana, the largest U.S. Navy air base in the U.S. East Coast. Approximately 250 aircraft based at Oceana, including 19 F/A-18 squadrons.
Oceana air base has a runway long as more than seven miles (10 kilometers) and a pilot training center of the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps (USMC). The base is located not far from the main base for the U.S. Navy Atlantic Fleet in Norfolk, Virginia.
