STANFORD, Residents of the Solomon Islands in the Pacific has unique characteristics. Many of them dark-skinned and blond. This puzzled the
scientists and to the genetic puzzle.
Now, scientists managed to solve the puzzle. In a publication in the journal Science on Thursday (03.05.2012), scientists revealed that these characteristics arise as a result of mutations in a gene.
To find these results, the researchers collected saliva from 43 people blond Solomon and Solomon 42 people with dark hair. Genetic analysis was then performed.
The analysis revealed that the gene is on chromosome TRYP1 that 9 of the 23 chromosomes that is the cause of blonde hair phenotypes. Mutations of this gene affect the enzyme associated with pigmentation in the Solomons.
Researchers revealed that these mutations do not occur in humans Europe, only the population of Melanesia. Analysis of 52 human populations in the world prove this.
"The character of the blond man arose independently in the equatorial area of Oceania. This is quite unexpected and surprising," said Kenny Eimer, researchers from Stanford University School of Medicine involved in this research.
