Blantyre, Malawi President Bingu wa Mutharika died on Friday (06/04/2012) morning, several hours after a 78-year-old leader suffered a heart attack, a hospital source.
"He died two hours .. after fainting" at midnight Thursday, said hospital sources in the capital Lilongwe. The source on condition of anonymity because the government has not issued an official announcement.
Mutharika, according to radio news the government, has flown to South Africa on Friday morning. Hospital sources said he was taken to South Africa to be embalmed.
The journalists at the airport in Lilongwe said they were expelled from the airport terminal while the aircraft will depart in the evening.
No government officials in both South Africa and hospitals in Johannesburg willing to comment on Mutharika, and Malawi government just said about the president's authority.
Mutharika, a former World Bank economist who first took power in 2004 and was re-elected with a massive majority in 2009 as president of the southern African country impoverished.
According to the constitution, Vice President Joyce Banda will take over the presidency to deal with the state.
